A new opportunity for paper and cardboard recovery

The Minister of the Environment, Sergio Costa, signed the directive which specifies when paper and cardboard ceases to be waste: “end of waste”.

The regulation, resulting also from numerous technical meetings and consultations with ISPRA, the technical body of the Ministry of the Environment, sector operators and ISS, the institution for the assessment of impacts on the environment and human health, establishes the methods and criteria according to which materials deriving from the treatment of paper and cardboard cease to be waste and can be used for other purposes.

The paper collected in Italy in 2018 is about 5.3 million tons and together with that coming from other industrial activities it reaches a total of about 6.65 million tons
Waste paper can be reused as a raw material in paper mill, as well as in industries which comply with the UNI EN 643 standard.

The Decalogue of the Green New Deal, as well as the recent meetings at the last edition of the Miac 2019, emphasized that the efficiency of the paper industry has improved by 30% in the last 20 years.

This demonstrates its great vocation for innovation. Cogeneration and the use of biomethane instead of natural gas are a goal in continuity with the growing efficiency of the sector but there is a lot of backlog for the recovery, enhancement and management of waste.

In Italy there is only one waste-to-energy plant dedicated to paper mill pulpers. About 13 years ago Cesaro Mac Import created the thickening system for this plant in order to increase the dry matter of the matrix to be sent to waste-to-energy. It is therefore evident the high level of attention to the recovery and optimization of the process expressed by Cesaro already 13 years ago.

The issue of disposal or waste-to-energy plants is accompanied by the need to develop and increase the recovery of paper mill pulp.

The Green New Deal and the END OF WASTE policies are the implementation of a natural process that the sector cannot do without and that nobody wants to do without.

The market can only benefit from the development of virtuous economies and we are already operating with various technological solutions.
We were the first to develop a high-performance solution for paper mill pulper recovery.
The technological alternatives on the market are prototypes, projects under construction or initiatives undergoing testing.

TIGER DEPACK PPS

Tiger Depack was created to be used in those waste treatment activities that generate waste such as plastic with a high presence of organic matter. In the "PLASTIC CLEANING" process the machine can work in Wet or Dry mode according to the needs of the subsequent processes.

The process waste of the industries that produce new paper from recycled paper and cardboard is the PULPER, a material that up to now has been disposed of at high costs in landfills or incinerators.

Pulper is very different from one industry to another. This depends on the type of paper used in production.

On the other hand, a common feature is a significant presence of paper fiber, greater or smaller, still trapped and therefore still usable if effectively recovered.

The TIGER DEPACK PPS, Paper Pulp Solution, is the line of products specifically created by Cesaro Mac Import for this purpose.

By exploiting the patented vertical centrifuge technology with the addition of process water, it is able to achieve top performance in a single step.
it is a technology that in just 20 square meters recovers up to 95% of paper fiber from paper mill pulper, which can be inserted both inside and outside the plant and which can work 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

This small space (20sm) contains all the components of the machinery: electrical panel, control panel, loading hopper and feeding system.
Paper pulp recovery is the process that allows the waste produced by paper mills to be valorised in a single step.

This type of waste (PULPER) is rich in fibers and water both made available to the production process, thanks to Tiger PPS de-packagers, as raw material for the plant. The remaining part of the waste is made up of packaging which after passing through the Tiger Depack are perfectly separated and reusable.
Wet treatment is the best solution together with the use of process liquids to avoid the consumption of clean water and get clean plastic waste.

RECOVERY PERFORMANCE

The goal is to recover up to 70% by weight of cellulose waste directly on the production site. The achievement of this objective, in economic terms, represents a substantial reduction in disposal costs.

The recovery of the matrix, in which the presence of fibers is up to 30%, provides a further positive impact for the reduction of raw material supply.

In this type of process, similar to the PLASTIC CLEANING process, Tiger depackagers return packaging with a high degree of cleanliness so to recover, in subsequent processes, every single type of material present. In addition to the aforementioned economic benefits, there is, at the same time, a virtuous management of process performance whose positive balance is even more relevant than the economic one.
